Overnight surfacing at Newcastle airport

Early take-off for Tarmac's airport contract

Tarmac National Contracting, the UK's largest surfacing contractor has successfully completed the £4.3 million resurfacing of the runway and taxiways at Newcastle International Airport two weeks ahead of schedule.

The maintenance works which commenced in January, took place overnight during a six hour window. Around 16,500 tonnes of Marshal asphalt has been used to resurface the entire 2,329 metre runway as part of a £4 million contract.

The works involved planing the main runway in preparation for applying a Nyclean bond coat and laying a 50mm Marshal asphalt surface. Tarmac's Masterflex airfield SMA, a thin asphalt was also laid to a 40mm depth on the taxiways.

David Laws, chief executive of Newcastle airport said: "We needed to ensure that the re-surfacing was carried out with minimal disruption to the airport's operation and so delivering over night and completing the works during a six hour time frame was essential."

John Hudson, Tarmac's National Contracting director for the north said: "Completing the resurfacing ahead of schedule was a challenge we were able to meet due to efficiencies in our supply chain. With a tight time window, contracts such as this one call for a skilled team and excellent project management."
